When things happen in life, do you ever just wonder why? What’s the meaning behind it? Is there purpose in it? Why me? Why this? Why now? Me too, my friends … and there’s been a lot in my life to ask about. Let this wife, mama, grammy and Jesus Freak assure you that you are not alone in this. There did come a point in my life when I had to replace “why” with “what”. What will I learn from this? What good will come out of it? What can I do to help others because of this pain?
It was through the life and death of my daughter Sydney that my eyes were opened to a different perspective in life; an eternal perspective. My girl Syd, developed this take on life too. Although she suffered much with medical challenges, she had a faith in God that continued to point to His goodness unapologetically. She believed as it says in Romans 8:28 that God can work all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
One day when Sydney and I were reading God’s word together, we came upon a story about Jesus healing a blind man. The scripture in John 9: 1-3 reads, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him” This resonated with both of us because God had already worked things out for good through Sydney’s life. She claimed that verse as her own, and it’s given life to my speaking and writing ministry.
I know first hand that pain is real and life is hard sometimes. This is not the place for “Pollyannaism” (is that a word?). I don’t take adversity lightly. I’m just open to seeing what God will do through it. The more our souls are stretched from times of suffering, the more room there is for us to be filled with God’s goodness.
